The museum is located at Crooms Hill in Greenwich (nearest station is Greenwich Overground/ Greenwich DLR). Admission is just Вё4.00 and afternoon tea will cost you just Вё6. A bargain for one of the prettiest and most unusual museums in London.
The Grade II listed building is pretty great too. It dates back to 1721, and there’s an orangery and pond, just for added prettiness. It’s even got a Japanese fan-shaped garden! And of course, there’s a gift shop so you can pick up your very own fan for well, fanning about on the train. And if you book in advance (in maximum groups of six) you can take part in a fan making workshop for just Вё20 each.
The Fan Museum houses more than 3500 fans, and is entirely dedicated to the art of fan making throughout the ages. And well, they’re really very pretty. Some of them date back to the 11th Century, and there’s even some from present day (and with the weather like it is today, I could use one). There’s so much history and style in the museum. You get to learn about the different motifs, the styles and the contexts. All of them vary between time period and country, all of them fascinating.
There’s a museum for everything in . There’s a , a (which frankly scares the berjeezers out of me) and sometimes even an insect circus museum. But there’s only one . In fact, it’s the only one in the world. And it’s in South East London’s prettiest spot: Greenwich.
